There has been a lot of talk as of late about this creeping thing from the Middle East called Sharia law. What is it? To oversimplify, it is the legal system of Islam drawn from various Islamic sacred texts and is practiced either liberally or strictly in fifty-seven Islamic countries. It is now creeping Westward.
It governs every aspect of a Muslim’s life, from how to walk into a room to what to eat to how to beat your wife. There are strict laws regarding blasphemy and as these laws slowly pass into Western legal systems, the citizens of countries that once had free speech find themselves unable to criticize Islam or its advances. And so, the creeping infiltration of Sharia continues.
We do not have to tolerate this. We have the constitutional right to criticize any ideology and criticize we should. Why? Sharia calls for the conversion or death of non-believers, with the exception of ahl al-kitab, the people of the book. Christians and Jews are magnanimously blessed by Sharia with the choice of paying a heavy tax and living as virtual outcasts or converting to Islam. Anyone else converts or is executed. Freedom of religion? Not under Sharia.
Sharia calls for female genital mutilation, honor killings, and public beatings. Most of these abhorrent tenets are directed at women and children, not to mention homosexuals who are simply executed. That anyone from a modern, Western country would even entertain the notion of “tolerating” Sharia is baffling at best. This so-called legal system is incompatible with the United States Constitution and with Western notions of freedom in general. We don’t want Sharia. We don’t need Sharia.
To stress how serious this is, I will tell you a story about a thirteen-year-old girl named Aisha, after the holier-than-thou prophet’s six-year-old bride. This modern Aisha was gang raped by three men. She reported the crime and was accused of adultery and sentenced to death. Death. One thousand Muslims gathered in a stadium to watch four men drag her kicking and screaming to a hole they’d dug just for the occasion. She was buried up to her chest while the crowd looked on. Fifty or so men threw rocks at her for ten minutes. She was dug out but was still alive so they stuck her back in the ground and stoned her again. One man tried to intervene and he was shot. Is he the moderate Muslim our liberals scream about? Where were the rest of them? Were they in the front row? The back row? Were they cowering at home? It doesn’t matter. The peaceful majority proved useless and a young girl was murdered.*
Her murder was legal, of course. Hers was an honor killing and an integral aspect of Sharia law. If we continue to allow this barbaric legal code to creep into our legal system we may very well be signing our daughters and granddaughters’ execution orders. This is not an exaggeration. Sharia law makes jihad obligatory. Sharia law makes female genital mutilation obligatory. Sharia law allows a man to beat his wife. Sharia law allows a man to marry a girl as young as nine. Sharia law is barbaric, unjust, and incompatible not only with the American legal system but with human rights.
Amidst cries for tolerance, I protest. I will not tolerate this. No one should. This Saturday, June 10, 2017, there will be nationwide marches in multiple cities against Sharia law. There is one near you. Go. Speak out against this barbarism. Stand with us against Sharia and we will make sure this archaic legal code rots in the desert sands and creeps no further.
*Ali, Ayaan Hirsi. Heretic. Harper Paperbacks, 2016. Any of Ayaan Ali’s books are a fantastic and easy-to-read introduction to the horrors of Sharia law and the creeping encroachment of Islam. Considered an apostate, she lives in constant danger of assassination and yet she continues to speak out against Sharia.
